St. Margaret’s Extension Programs Build Connections and Learning Across Grade Levels

Extension Programs at St. Margaret's are designed to provide engaging activities that foster personal growth, build connections among students, and enhance the overall educational experience.
At St. Margaret's, nurturing of the whole child extends beyond the classroom and into after-school extension programs. Extended Day, enrichment classes, dance conservatory classes and other special events under the umbrella of Extension Programs are designed to provide engaging activities that foster personal growth, build connections among students, and enhance the overall educational experience.

St. Margaret’s enrichment classes offer students the chance to explore diverse interests from arts and athletics to science and technology. For example, in the “Icky Sticky Science Club,” students dive into a world of science experiments that stir curiosity and foster a love for learning. Hands-on activities such as making flubber, foam, and homemade play snow provide students an opportunity to engage in tactile experiences to enhance their understanding of scientific concepts and encourage critical thinking and creativity.

Another benefit of St. Margaret’s after-school programs is that they allow students to interact with peers from different grades, which fosters a sense of community and belonging. In clubs like First Lego League Challenge, which includes grades 4-8, interactions help students develop socially, building their growth and confidence.

St. Margaret’s offers three sessions a year of rotating enrichment classes, allowing students to explore different activities throughout the year while also providing consistent options for those who want to deepen their skills. For instance, the “Strategic Chess” club is offered on Wednesdays throughout the year, allowing students to develop their strategic thinking in a consistent environment.

Dance conservatory classes are structured as a yearlong program to provide the consistency necessary for developing essential skills such as proper posture, learning the skill to express emotions through movement, understanding various choreography styles, and building the strength and flexibility needed for complex routines. This commitment ensures that dancers progress steadily and master dance skills.

Overall, enrichment classes empower students to take risks, explore new ideas and try new learning activities. As students experiment with different materials in clubs like Icky Sticky Science, Lego, Art, or Laser Cutting Club, or engage in creative projects in Extended Day, they build confidence and connections through learning.
