The Tartan spring sports are well underway, with the baseball, lacrosse, track & field and boys volleyball programs picking up confidence-building wins.
Baseball
The Tartans' hot streak continued on Thursday as St. Margaret's downed league rival CVCS 3-2 in a wild walk-off finish at San Juan Sportspark. Wes Kim scored the winning run spurred on by a wild pitch attempting to throw out Andrew Miehe to seal the win for the Tartans. Pitchers Roberto Gonzalez and Andrew Miehe kept the Eagles' batters in check all afternoon.
St. Margaret's have been relying on the leadership of Jake Carreon and Colin Miehe as the Tartans extend their win streak to 5-0. The Tartans return to the diamond on March 10, taking on Crean Lutheran at the San Juan Sports Park at 3:15 p.m.
Boys Lacrosse
The Tartans kicked off the 2020 campaign with a solid 17-3 road win against San Marcos High on February 28.
Led by Will Stahl's five goals, the Tartans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Matt Groeninger (three goals, two assists), Dylan Lam (three goals, one assist), Owen Binder (two goals, one assist) and Riley Chester (two goals, one assist) kept St. Margaret's firmly in the driver's seat all evening. Defensively, goaltender Sebastian Chicas made five saves while Hayden Chester picked up a team-high five groundballs.
The 1-0 Tartans take on Faith Lutheran of Nevada at home Friday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m.
Girls Lacrosse
The 1-1 Tartans notched a clutch come-from-behind road win on March 4, defeating Westlake High 13-9. St. Margaret's was led by Campbell Case's nine points on eight goals and one assist, and solid play at the x, winning 10 draw controls. Lauren Lam contributed four goals while Grace Karstetter (three assists, three draw controls) and Minka Martinez (one goal) supported the winning effort. Netminder Olivia Young tallied nine saves on the day.
The Tartans will return to play Tuesday, March 10, facing off against San Marco High School on Tartan Field at 5:30 p.m.
Track & Field
The Tartans came away with a win at the first San Joaquin League meet of the year on Thursday. The girls squad posted a convincing 122 point margin of victory while the boys coasted to a 21 point win on the day.
Some events had to be curtailed due to fading daylight, but highlights of the meet included: The girls 4x100 Relay team of Molly Green, Makenna Lizarde, Sophia Karahalios and Kaelyn Dunnell taking first with a time of 52.89, Jacklyn Mok placing first in the discus throw, Jackson Adelman finishing first in the 1600m run with a time of 4:46.82 and Sam Dunnell taking first in the high jump.
Boys Volleyball
St. Margaret's opened the season 1-0 with a four-set road victory over Santiago High School on March 5. Set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, and 25-19, with senior Anthony Constantino leading the Tartan offense in kills. On the defensive side, junior Max Maryott and freshman Shane Aitken provided consistent passing and solid defense to contribute to the win.
The Tartans will travel to participate in the Chadwick School Tournament on Saturday, March 7.
