PHOTOS: Scottie Snack Cart Provides Healthy Snack Options for Lower School Students
The cart is part of a PTF grant for five years of nutrition education and access to whole foods in the Lower School.
St. Margaret’s welcomed the return of the Scottie Snack Cart, which provides a sampling of nutritious fruits and vegetables for Lower School students to enjoy during the school day.
The Lower School received a PTF grant for five years of nutrition education and access to whole foods in 2022. That led to the creation of the Scottie Snack Cart, which is rolled out to the Lower School playground once a month. The debut of the cart last week proved popular, as students came by during their downtime to sample Fuji apples, gumdrop grapes and cantaloupe.
“The Scottie Snack Cart has been popular among our students, and we couldn’t be more thrilled,” Lower School Principal Jennifer Blount said. “It is our hope that students will take this experience home and request fruits and vegetables in their daily meals, including those they bring for snack and lunch here at school.”
The produce comes from locally sourced companies, like The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. In addition to the snack offerings, Lower School teachers have access to an informative slideshow to educate students on the nutritional benefits of the fruits and vegetables featured on the cart that month.
The cart was built by Upper School student Chase Springer as part of an Eagle Scout project, and the distribution of fruits and vegetables is done by grade 5 parent volunteers.
