Grade 1 Students Explore the Deep Blue at The Ocean Institute

St. Margaret’s grade 1 students took a field trip to The Ocean Institute in Dana Point—a visit that expanded their learning of science.
The students visited The Ocean Institute this week to learn more about animal habitats and different ocean creatures from hermit crabs to starfish. The students experienced The House for Hermit Crab program at The Ocean Institute which is part of the exciting LiteraSEA series that dives into the connections between science and beloved children’s books.

Inspired by Eric Carle’s "A House for Hermit Crab," students explored the wonders of the ocean, discovering the difference between storybook characters and real-life sea creatures. They had the opportunity to hold live hermit crabs, touch animals in the Discovery Pool, and explore the unique habitats of the ocean. It was a fun-filled day of hands-on learning, where they discovered and explored some of the fascinating mysteries that lie beneath the surface of the ocean.
