Special Camp Marks Its 25th Year With a Celebration at St. Margaret’s

The impact of Special Camp for Special Kids has lasted a quarter of a century—and the milestone anniversary was worthy of a celebration.

The groundbreaking recreational and service-oriented summer camp for children and teens with disabilities celebrated its 25th birthday this summer. On Saturday, current and past campers, volunteers, staff and family gathered at St. Margaret’s for a celebration complete with a DJ, carnival games, food trucks and more.

Among the attendees were campers from the inaugural Special Camp in 1992, as well as two of the past directors, Ryan Newman and Kristin Friedersdorf. About 200 past and present campers, counselors and family members attended as well.

“We know Special Camp makes a difference, yet to see so many people come out reinforced how important this camp is for so many people,” said Lindsay Eres, executive director of Special Camp for Special Kids.

The St. Margaret’s Reverend Mike Wallens began Special Camp for Special Kids in 1992 with 15 campers and 20 counselors. This summer, 220 campers and 220 counselors participated and took part in activities that included trips to the San Diego Zoo, Knott’s Berry Farm and the beach at Oceanside Harbor. More than half of the counselors were St. Margaret’s students.

Mrs. Eres said the anniversary celebration was a good reminder of the impact Special Camp has made in its first 25 years.

“Since its inception in 1992, Special Camp for Special Kids has grown from a small local organization to a nationally recognized program,” Mrs. Eres said. “Special Camp is truly unique because of its one-to-one camper to counselor ratio. Our participants travel from all over Southern California and beyond to be a part of Special Camp.

“As we celebrate 25 years, Special Camp strives to continue its role in the community for years to come.”
