Girls Golf Captures Runner-Up Spot at CIF-SS Div. II Tournament

The Tartans clawed their way from 18th to 2nd place on Monday.
St. Margaret's girls golf team placed second at the CIF-SS Div. II Championship held at River Ridge Country Club in Oxnard on Monday.

The Tartans had to dig out of an early 18th-place start and battled against windy and chilly conditions against an experienced field. Freshmen Nicole Wang and Vivienne Zhai both had rough starts but turned it around after seven holes of play. Both golfers came close to shooting even for the rest of the rounds, scoring 79 (+7). The clutch play of the young teammates kept the Tartans in contention.

Team captains Annie Weng and Jessica Liu led for the Tartans, with Weng shooting a 73 (+1) with birdies on holes 11 and 17. Liu finished with a 74 (+2) with birdies on 11, 14 and 18 as well as an eagle on 13. Senior captain Maddie Lewis had a rough start but improved on the back with pars on 10, 12, 13, 16, and 17, finishing with an 85 (+13).

By tournament end the Tartans (390, +30) had climbed 16 places, ending up behind No. 1 Portola High School (380, +20) and ahead of No. 3 Valencia (395, +35). Portola advances to the SCGA Qualifier on Nov. 7, with Tartans falling just short.

Annie Weng will represent St. Margaret's at the Individual SCGA Qualifier, alos on Nov. 7. Weng looks to become the third female Tartan to qualify and play in the SCGA event.
