St. Margaret's delivered its first win of the season on Saturday.
St. Margaret's football program notched an early-season win, downing the LaSalle Lancers 19-14 on Tartan Field on September 7.
The Tartans struck first as Sam Orellana (14 rushes for 64 yards, 1 TD) punched it in on a 6-yard run early in the second quarter. LaSalle quickly answered, connecting a 67-yard pass to even it up a minute later. The Lancers took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
The Tartan defense kept the Lancers at bay while kicker Mason Allison (1-1 fg, 2-2 extra points) brought St. Margaret's within 5 with a 24-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. Luke Newman hauled in a 16-yard Kai Letcher (12-22-3, 158 yds, 1 TD) touchdown strike to put the Tartans ahead 17-14 early in the fourth quarter. St. Margaret's defense again stood tall, keeping the Lancers out of the endzone. A late safety on a defensive hold sealed it for the Tartans, 19-14.
Defensive standouts for the Tartans included Jack Klausner (1 int, 7 tckl assist), Caleb Beadel (1 fmbl rec, 2 tckl), Andrew Toubin (4 tckl, 4 assist) and Sebastian Salazar (4 tckl, 3 assist).
"The team proved incredibly resilient in their victory over La Salle HS in a unique Saturday evening game," said Tartan head coach Dan O'Shea. "Battling back from an early deficit, playing in unusual weather, and taking on a talented opponent could not deter our squad from securing their first win in this young season."
The 1-1 Tartans will next take on 1-2 Laguna Hills on Friday, September 13, on Tartan Field at 7:00 pm.
