Middle School Math Students Create Pop Art Using Geometry Scale Factor
Art and numbers produce fun reproduction of objects in two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometry.
Middle School students in geometry honors class combined art and numbers to produce fun reproduction of objects in two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometry.
The project applied learning of the scale factor, a number that scales, or multiplies, some quantity and is the ratio of any two corresponding lengths in two similar geometric figures. Students select an object of their choice and use a scale factor to produce an identical version only larger.
The students, taught by Middle School math teacher Cori Samskey, displayed this year's projects and favorite projects from former students. For example, a cereal box scaled into a larger POP-style artwork that is mathematically accurate is a marvel to see.
Every year this unit lesson is engaging and fun. “It is a favorite project amongst Middle School geometry honors students that is looked forward to each year,” Ms. Samskey said.
