St. Margaret’s Celebrates 64th Swallows Day Parade With San Juan Capistrano Community

St. Margaret’s student leaders and professional community members marched together through the symphony of rain alongside Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano and Special Camp as the community welcomed the return of the swallows at the 64th annual Swallows Day Parade. 

 

The San Juan Capistrano community and St. Margaret’s group celebrated the beloved return of the swallows despite the drippy weather. The Tartan spirit was unwavering with Lower School students carrying 3D swallows displaying a variety of bright and fun colors, Middle School students from the cast of SpongeBob greeting the crowd with enthusiasm and Upper School student-athletes displaying school spirit. Each group carried signs which proudly displayed the school’s core values like leadership, character and service.

 

Students were joined by Head of School Dr. Jeneen Graham, Lower School Principal Jennifer Blount and Lower School Assistant Principal Maile Bellosi. Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano students marched proudly sharing motivational posters about the program, and Special Camp, led by executive director Lindsay Eres, was accompanied by campers and counselors sporting ponchos as the rain drizzled the streets.

 

This year, true to St. Margaret’s cross-divisional opportunities, producing the swallows was a collaboration. Middle School students showcased laser-printed 3D swallows made of kilos of filament guided by computer science teacher Nathan Valdez. Then, the swallows were given to Middle School theater technical arts students led by Gordon Richins and Justice Musick-Corson who attached dowels to allow students to bring the swallows to life. The final phase was painting the swallows thanks to the visual arts department. St. Margaret’s has been a sponsor and participant in the Swallows Day Parade for many years and displaying the beloved swallows is always welcomed by the San Juan community.
