Tartans Deliver in the Pacific Hills Cross Country Finals to Advance to the CIF Prelims
St. Margaret's boasts a team title and two individual league champs.
St. Margaret's played host to the 2024 Pacific Hills League Cross Country Championships on Wednesday at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, and walked away with a team title and two individual league champions.
Zach Causee took the lead boys group through the mile mark in 5:20 and then caused a massive break in the pack with teammates Samarth Wadhwa and Zaiden Gurusamy in tow. The trio would end the race going 1-2-3 to secure a decisive 44-point win over second-place Laguna Beach. Their 1-5 gap of just over a minute has been their calling card to success this season. Teammates Malcolm Capelle (7th) and Ben Harrison (8th) closed well in the second half to put all five scoring Tartans in the top 10. The group earned first-team all-league honors for their efforts.
Still running short-handed due to injury and illness, the Tartan girls team displayed incredible young talent and resilience as they finished just 9 points behind Southern Section-ranked Laguna Beach. Freshman Heidi Beshk torched the field by over 30 seconds to secure the individual title, while Coco Johnson (3rd) and Kate Sullivan (8th) earned all-league honors with impressive performances.
"It certainly was not ideal conditions, with strong wind gusts making the course really difficult. But this group has proved all season that they are at their best when the challenge is daunting," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "I couldn't be more impressed with how our young runners stepped up in their first varsity championship to deliver big results. The future is very bright, and we are incredibly excited to enter the CIF Championships with this momentum."
